The new year festival or Ugadi is celebrated with fervor and joy for Indians in urban and rural parts of India on Friday, March 27, 2009. People change and chocarrerías greetings to mark the festival. All offices and schools remained closed in the day. Chaitra Sukladi, Ugadi, Gudi Padava, Chettiar Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraoba made famous in different parts of the country to herald the New Year according to various Indian calendars. The onset of spring also marks the beginning of new life with plants acquiring new life, shoots and leaves. Spring is considered the first season of the year hence also heralding a new year and new beginning. The vitality of life and green fields, meadows full of colorful blossoms signify growth, prosperity and welfare. With the coming of Ugadi, the naturally perfumed jasmines spread a sweet fragrance which is perhaps unparalleled by any other own creation of nature! While large garlands of jasmine are offered to God in the houses and temples, jasmine flowers woven in groups adorn the braids of women. The festival marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the orbit of the moon. It is a day when mantras are sung and predictions caused the New Year. It is a season for raw mangoes spreading its aroma in the air and the fully blossomed neem tree that makes the air healthy. Jaggery also made fresh crop of sugarcane adds a renewed flavor to the typical dishes associated with Ugadi. Preparations for the festival begin a weeks later. Houses are given a complete wash. Shopping for new clothes and buy other items that go with the requirements of the festival are done with much enthusiasm. Ugadi is celebrated with festive fervor in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. His Excellency the Governor of Karnataka Rameshwar Thakur that Mr. has greeted the people of Karnataka on the occasion of Ugadi. In his message the Governor said, “At the occasion of festival of Ugadi Sri Virodhi Samvatsara, I want to extend my warm greetings and good wishes to the people of Karnataka. The festival of Ugadi means equanimity, joy and sorrow in life to be taken note as people and as a symbolic gesture to prove sweet (jaggery) and bitter (neem flowers) together. “
