The Mustangs’ mat woes continued Dec. 20 as Mount View (0-4) lost to Madison 47-12. The Bulldogs are an opponent with not much more experience than the Mustangs.
“All in all, a disappointing showing,” said coach Richards. “With Madison only six points ahead by the time all the forfeits were figured in and them not having a large experience edge on us, I figured the meet would be a close one. I was mistaken.”
“At 119, 160 and 215 [pounds], I knew we were really outgunned, so there weren’t any surprises their,” said Richards. “Our 119 and 160 [pounders] are completely new to wrestling, and at 215, Madison has one of their best wrestlers.”
The individual results, with Mount View wrestlers listed first, were:
119 pounds — Marissa Cox was pinned by Patrick Magoen at 2:54.
125 pounds — Derek Tripp was pinned by Courtney Randall at 0:45.
130 pounds — Megan Morton won by forfeit over Madison.
135 pounds — Kyia Bryant lost to Kyle Williams, 17-1.
140 pounds — Kory Pelletier was pinned by Colby Staples at 4:14.
160 pounds — Joel Poulin was pinned by Sean Bixby at 1:30.
171 pounds — Tristen Ripley pinned Ivan Cobb at 4:54.
215 pounds — Tyler Stevenson was pinned by Jake Linkletter at 1:01.
A bright spot for the Mustangs, even in a loosing effort, was Pelletier’s match at 140 pounds. While Pelletier did get pinned, the match was a seesaw battle right until the end. The coach said Pelletier went down fighting. “Being a first-year wrestler certainly cost him the match,” but Richards said he got an “A for effort.”
“I saw a lot of scrap in that match,” said Richards. “I also see a kid who listens and learns every practice. Once he gets things figured out a little better, I suspect the wins will start coming along.”
At 171 pounds, Ripley wrestled to the only actual mat win of the day for the Mustangs.
“I saw a good deal of improvement in Ripley’s stand up skills from last week,” said coach Richards. “On the mat, he got out of position a few times, which cost him; but he managed to recover and pull off the win. We still have some work to do but Ripley continues to get better. [Ivan] Cobb looked to be a decent opponent and was competitive up until he ran out of gas early in the second period. Tough matches like these are just what Tristen needs. He’s also finding out that life at 171 means more technique as he can’t just walk in and overpower good opponents like he could at 152 [pounds] last year.”
