Police on Friday were searching the Hudson River near the Tappan Zee Bridge, around 25 miles north of Manhattan, for the body of Anne Morell Petrillo. Authorities say they found a note and believe she got out of her car on and jumped off the bridge Thursday evening.

Petrillo’s mother, the great-great-granddaughter of Detroit News founder James Scripps, was beaten to death with a hammer in Anne’s bedroom by her stepfather, Scott Douglas, on New Year’s Eve in 1993.

Douglas fled and jumped to his death from the same bridge. His body was found three months after the slaying.

Over two and half million jobs have been lost so far in 2009, according to the data the Labour Department has released.

March’s monthly loss is up slightly from the loss of 651,000 jobs in February, although it’s less than the number of jobs lost in January. That figure was revised up to a loss of 741,000 jobs, the biggest monthly drop in 59 years.

The unemployment rate climbed to 8.5 percent from 8.1 percent in February, in line with economists’ forecasts. It was the highest since October, 1983.

The job losses were felt throughout all areas of the economy, with the manufacturing and construction sectors as well as business and professional services industries all cutting more than 100,000 jobs each in March.

Retailers and leisure and hospitality companies also trimmed jobs, as did the government. The only industry to post a gain in jobs during the month was the education and health care services group – and that sector added only a modest 8,000 jobs in the month.

Employers cut back the number of hours for their workers as well. The average hourly work week fell to 33.2 hours, the lowest level on record going back to 1964.

In the meantime the unemployment rate dipped slightly in the US in July as the rate of job losses reported slowed, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

July’s unemployment rate stood at 9.4 percent, representing 14.5 million people, down from 9.5 percent in June representing 14.7 million people.

In a letter read during worship services, Daugherty, founder of Victory Christian Center in Tulsa, said he was hospitalized last week because of a viral infection in his throat. After running a series of tests, doctors diagnosed him with lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymphatic system.

One of the symptoms is swollen, painless lymph nodes in the neck, according to the National Institutes of Health.

“My faith is in God’s ability to give me victory in life and healing from sickness every day,” said Daugherty, who is well-known for his Word-Faith teaching. “Therefore, I am standing on God’s promises of wholeness in every cell.”

Daugherty remains hospitalized and said he plans to maximize God’s “gifts” in doctors, medicine, nutrition, diet and exercise. “Ultimately, all healing comes from God so our eyes are on Him,” he said. “Our faith is in Jesus that we will come through victoriously.”

He asked that members pray for the abnormal lymph cells to be eliminated, for healthy blood cells to increase, and for his immune system to be strengthened.

A list of prayer shield Scriptures was posted on the church’s Web site.

“That’s our focus, prayer,” said Victory associate pastor Bruce Edwards. “We’re standing in faith for his healing.”

Edwards said it remains unclear how long Daugherty will be away from the pulpit. Currently, Daugherty’s wife and co-pastor, Sharon, and other Victory ministers are assuming his preaching duties.

Gonzalez said,

“We should protect animals, not to sacrifice their lives for the love of fashion and luxury.

“October and I have changed many habits in light of the inhumane treatment of animals that occurs not only in the fur industry, but on factory farms.”

“I changed my diet a few years of a diet based on plants. And when you do and why you read it, and as useful in the treatment of animals. What happens with animals, the manufacturing industry is ridiculous.”

“We have a voice. That is why we have to do something like that.”

Ralph and Karen Guastaferro of Amherst came to fame in January last year for their appearance on Wife Swap in which Angie Boss from Indiana went to join Ralph and Alicia.

Now Ralph, 62, and Karen, 55, have confessed to laundering $1.2 million in a Canadian telemarketing scheme. He faces 46-57 months and she faces 16 months. They have pleaded guilty to felony charges.

But the bigger crime? Letting Alicia have not one, not two, but three cellphones on the trainwreck episode of Wife Swap.

Wife Swap said of the family the following:

Teachers are always very impressed with her projects and she enjoys taking credit for them. When you look as good as Alicia having brains is just an added bonus.

On any given day she can receive over 150 text messages. She uses a wireless phone headset so she can talk to her friends and watch TV at the same time. We speak to her as often as we can. She calls me everyday from school at exactly 11:40 a.m. When she goes out she calls us at least once to talk casually and gossip and of course she always calls us to coordinate when she and her friends need to be picked up. ” “

Soon after his enlistment, Maher was assigned to the West Point gymnasium. He claimed he couldn’t swim a stroke, but as the Department of Physical Training’s swimming instructor from 1899 to 1928, he made sure that each and every cadet could.

“It has been argued that Marty Maher knew personally more officers in the United States Army than any other person alive,” the U.S.M.A. Public Affairs Office says. From Pershing to Patton, Bradley to Bolivar, Maher knew them all — and he learned more than just their names. The scrappy young Irishman knew them well, and loved them. His work ethic, enthusiasm, and affection for the corps of cadets inspired many to love him, too –he was named an honorary member of the classes of 1912, 1926 and 1928.

As Maher progressed through the ranks to technical sergeant (E-7), he essentially grew up along with many young officers; as he matured, he nurtured them. The novelization of his life was aptly titled “Bringing Up the Brass.” One of Maher’s former swimming students, Dwight D. Eisenhower, wrote the foreword: “I cannot put too high an estimate on the help [Maher] gave my morale. Marty, with his Irish wit and his talent for understanding, did the same for many, many others … This foreword is meant to be a testament of the admiration and affection one soldier feels for an old friend, associate and helper, Sgt. Marty Maher of West Point.”

Maher’s impressions and memories of West Point in the book were so vivid that director John Ford made them into what is still called the best movie about the U.S. Military Academy — “The Long Gray Line. Starring Tyrone Power as Maher and Maureen O’Hara as his wife, Mary, the film provides a warm and humorous noncommissioned officer’s perspective on our nation’s oldest officer training institute.

After his 1928 military retirement, Maher took a civil service position in the gymnasium until he retired to New City, N.Y., in 1946. Even then, he would take the train to Highland Falls almost daily for meals and conversation at what is now the Park Restaurant: “It ’tis, you might say, my APO,” Maher quipped. He died on Jan. 17, 1961, at the age of 84 and is buried in the West Point cemetery.

The South African sports ministry pushed the IAAF to keep the recent gender test results strictly between patient and doctor. Once the IAAF agreed, the ministry announced today the confidentiality and urged South Africans and media to please respect Semenya’s privacy.

Semenya made headlines after her 800 meter race, not only for her stunning victory, but also for her noticeably masculine build and dramatic drop in time. The ministry claimed the IAAF ordered gender test pre-race, but it turned out Atheltics South Africa president Leonard Chuene lied about these tests being performed; he was later suspended from his post. However rumors still swirled post-race, especially as an Australian news source announced that the 18 year old runner was a hemaphrodite.

Semenya has served as a political symbol for gender equality and international oppression.
The IAAF has apologized for its role in this precedent-setting ordeal, claiming that they are sorry for the release of so much mis-information. The people of South Africa have stood behind their 1:55 800meter world champion the entire time.
